MATT: When I ask for persuasion or deception on your end, when someone’s rolling insight on you, that’s an opportunity for you to be honest and choose persuasion. That way, when the opportunity does arrive that you are deceiving somebody, the person that’s rolling insight doesn’t know whether you are or not.
AABRIA: I’ve taken that from you, by the way. I love that. I was like, persuasion or deception, don’t say which.
MATT: Yeah, the player chooses, they just say a number, and then whether you’re deceiving or you’re not, if you succeed over them, then you get to give the information you want.
BRENNAN: That’s slick as hell. And that’s what I do now too. Stealing that right away.
MATT: We all steal from each other. Make us all better.
— Adventuring Party: All About The Ravening War S12E04: “The Mystic River Episode”
Not just DMs at the table either.
BRENNAN: Matt Colville had a great thing that he said about dungeon mastering in his “Running the Game” series that was like the fundamental tool of the GM is control over time.

I think that pause and that “no” was very telling. What exactly it was about we don’t know for sure, though of course we can guess, but if it was just about Will, Orym wouldn’t have hesitated to say, “Not anymore” or “I lost him” or anything he’s already said earlier in the campaign when asked. Instead, he got quiet, he thought about the question, and simply replied “No”.
There are so many unsaid things going on in that pause!

I love so much that Laerryn is half Patia’s age
Sometimes you gotta wait 150 years for your best friend to be born and another 130 until she’s of enough age to engage in friendship
Everyone talking about how much they wanted Emily vs Matt and then watching ep 1 I’m thinking-
Nah. The perfect counterpoint to Matt is Zac Oyama.
Every time things got too serious at the table or Matt started going deep into monologue/narration Zac is cutting in with the Perfect. Deadpan. One Liner.
Zac Oyama’s short and sweet humor is the essential contrast to Matt Mercer’s expansive dramatic storytelling.
I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.
